The West Galt
Pumpkin People
Every neighbourhood has something that makes it worth living in. In West Galt, that something happens every October, when over 30 homes transform their front yards into elaborately themed pumpkin-people displays that draw visitors from across the region.
I moved into this neighbourhood 10 years ago, which means I have been watching this tradition for almost its entire life. Every year, the Victoria community in West Galt picks a theme, and homeowners run with it in whatever direction their imagination takes them. The results range from quietly charming to genuinely impressive to laugh-out-loud funny.
This year's theme was Water. Vague enough to be interpreted a hundred different ways, specific enough to pull the street together into something coherent. What followed was exactly what this tradition does best.
Favourites
A theme like "water" invites creativity. Some homeowners went whimsical. Some went political. Some built full-scale pirate ships in their front yards. No complaints here.
The dunk tank might be the most talked-about display this year. Someone dressed as a certain former U.S. president perched in a full dunk-tank setup, complete with a target and painted water splash. It stopped traffic. Canadians, man.
The pirate theme showed up on more than one street, and the level of commitment was something else. Full ships, flags, rigging, pumpkin crews. These are not yard decorations you pick up at the dollar store. These are builds.
Eleven years in, the tradition has not slowed down. If anything, the displays keep getting more ambitious every year.
More Than It Looks
People drive in from across Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo to walk these streets every October. That kind of voluntary, community-organized tradition does not happen by accident, and it does not happen everywhere. It happens when neighbours actually know each other, when there is enough pride in a place to put in the work year after year, and when people care about creating something worth sharing.
That is the part of a neighbourhood that never shows up in a listing. No MLS field for "community spirit." No stat tile for "how good are the neighbours." But when you are choosing where to plant roots, it matters enormously. The Pumpkin People are one of the reasons West Galt punches above its weight as a place to live.

Worth Highlighting?
The West Galt Pumpkin People are the first entry in what I want to make an ongoing series. Waterloo Region is full of neighbourhoods with their own traditions, personalities, and hidden gems that do not make it into real estate listings or tourism guides. I want to find them and write about them.
If your neighbourhood does something unique, whether it is a seasonal tradition, an annual event, a block-level thing that outsiders would not know about, I would genuinely love to hear about it. Send me a message or reach out on Instagram. These are the stories worth telling.
Worth Featuring?
I'd love to shine a light on it.
