The Township
Waterloo Region's Largest Township
Woolwich Township sits to the north and east of Waterloo and borders Kitchener and Cambridge. More than 25,000 people* live here, across 10 communities. Elmira, St. Jacobs, and Breslau are the three largest, with smaller communities including Conestogo, Maryhill, Floradale, and West Montrose. The character is rural and historic. The Grand River and the Conestogo River run through the township, farmland surrounds the villages, and the area is home to a large Old Order Mennonite population, so horse-drawn buggies share the roads. The West Montrose Covered Bridge, known as the Kissing Bridge, is the only remaining covered bridge in Ontario, and St. Jacobs is home to one of Canada's largest year-round farmers' markets. Homes range from mature streets in Elmira and historic village houses in St. Jacobs to newer subdivisions in Breslau and country properties with acreage. Highway 85 runs from Waterloo to Elmira, Highway 7 passes through Breslau, and the Region of Waterloo International Airport is in Breslau. Why Woolwich
What Makes This Township Stand Out
The Kissing Bridge
The West Montrose Covered Bridge, built in 1880 to 1881 over the Grand River, is the only remaining covered bridge in Ontario and a Provincial Historic Site.
St. Jacobs
One of Canada's largest year-round farmers' markets, open since 1975, plus a village known for its shops, restaurants, and theatre.
Elmira
The township's largest community, with a lively downtown, the Woolwich Memorial Centre, and a maple syrup festival held every spring since 1965 and billed as the world's largest one-day maple syrup festival.
Rural and Mennonite Heritage
Farmland, two river valleys, and a large Old Order Mennonite population give the township a character that's hard to find this close to the cities.
Housing Variety
Mature Elmira streets, historic village homes, newer subdivisions in Breslau and Elmira, and rural properties with acreage. The mix is wider than in most parts of the region.
